If customers find you by searching for a service near them, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see, before your website. Here’s a checklist to make sure it’s working for you.
The basics
- Claim and verify the profile. If someone else (a former employee, an old agency) controls it, request ownership through Google.
- Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage and website. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google’s guidelines.
- Choose the most specific primary category that describes your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
- Enter your address in one consistent format, including unit number and postal code. If you serve customers at their location, set service areas and hide the address instead.
- Add the phone number customers should call, and your website.
- Set accurate opening hours, and update them for public holidays.
Make it complete
- Write a description that says what you do, who for, and where, in plain language.
- List your services or products, with short descriptions.
- Add attributes that apply to you, such as wheelchair access or online appointments.
- Upload real photos: your premises inside and out, your team, and your work. Add new ones regularly.
Keep it active
- Post updates, offers or news occasionally, so the profile looks maintained.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section before someone else does.
- Check for suggested edits from the public. Anyone can suggest changes to your listing.
Reviews
Ask every happy customer for a review, using a short review link or QR code. Don’t offer discounts or gifts in exchange: incentivised reviews break Google’s policies. Reply to reviews, especially critical ones, calmly and helpfully. Future customers read the replies too.
Match it everywhere
Make sure your name, address and phone number on your profile match your website and other listings exactly. Inconsistent details make search engines less sure which information is right.
